Air quality monitoring with residents in Land van Cuijk

Citizen participation: learning while informing

Together with residents we monitor particulate matter at 150 locations. Both in public spaces and at people’s homes. What was once invisible becomes visible.

Wood burning and busy roads are common sources of air pollution in many municipalities. Interest from residents was high from the start, with more than enough participants volunteering to host sensors. During four well-attended information sessions, participants were guided to set everything up. After that, monitoring began.

“Many companies mainly focus on selling equipment, or fail to approach participation effectively. Letting citizens assemble equipment themselves may seem engaging, but results in less reliable data."

Measuring NO₂ along busy roads in Nijmegen

How long are NO₂ concentrations elevated?

AeroCount monitors traffic-related air pollution at eight locations along busy roads in Nijmegen. This provides detailed insight into local variations in NO₂ concentrations.

Nijmegen has a dense traffic network. Nearly 100,000 motor vehicles cross the two Waal bridges each day. Combined with inland shipping, construction activities and industry, this highlights the importance of local monitoring.

The RIVM already measures at two locations: the busy Graafseweg and the nearby Ruyterstraat. Just 200 metres apart, yet, the average NO₂ concentration differs by 25%.

A local monitoring network provides a much more detailed picture of air pollution, enabling municipalities to make better-informed decisions on traffic and spatial planning.
